Critics in the past have struggled to pin down the genre of Yonaka’s music. Fresh out of Brighton, this four piece were described in one NME review as a blend of “metal and head-banging-rock with slick hip-hop beats and grime’s DIY ethos”. Take from that what you will. When Phil Sansom sat down with them at the Portland Arms in November they talked about what these genre definitions really mean, about recording their new EP Heavy, and about some of the best and worst ideas for album names.
